Ashtanga Yoga and climate change

Ashtanga Yoga und der Klimawandel

Another world is possible

How can we not be ashamed of the immense destruction of the planet we are leaving to future generations?
We live in a world in which billions of people do not even have a chance at a life that enables even a fraction of our prosperity and security.
We know that this prosperity is based on centuries of exploitation, that we have a responsibility, even if we seem small and insignificant.
We can try to suppress all this knowledge. We can constantly try to distract ourselves from it, to console ourselves with the fact that others are even worse than ourselves.
But none of this can help. All of this goes so against our nature that the consequences can only be illness and depression.

But there is a simple solution. We accept this fundamental crisis. We try to overcome the overwhelming selfishness we have been taught and strive to leave a better world instead of a worse one. It is enough that initially few of us would stop consuming more resources than can be regenerated. Little by little we will see again that what is necessary is the right thing and not the maximum. If more and more people use a universal ethical framework to the best of their knowledge and belief and inspire others in the process, the world will become a different place.
What would be nicer than a world that you don't have to be ashamed of. A world with more connectedness, less environmental destruction, less greed and social imbalances, less power in the hands of the greediest and most ruthless people! Societies that value work for the public more than money and other personal benefits to the detriment of others.
None of this is new. But it remains the only world that would be worth every thought, every action, every second of our lives!

Is this "moralizing"? If so, is not having moral standards a better path for humanity? Is it acceptable that the "freedom" of a few brings death and destruction to many?

We didn't know is not an option

Many Yoga pracitioners today seem to believe that all about Yoga is just good and by being a "Yogi" we are all fine. I do not agree, because our lifestyle is not sustainable.
This text here is not against anyone as an individual. But it is important to point out critical patterns that turned the ideals of Yoga into their exact opposite.
All the following comes from extensive self study and a sometimes painful transformation process over almost 20 years.

If you feel attacked, please have faith that this is not my intention.
A painful and possibly angry first reaction indicates an insult to the ego, a conflict with a sense of truthfulness (which is also what "Krishna", the inner teacher, stands for). This problem can easily be overcome. We just need to exactly behave like everyone should on this planet.

Yogic Sutra on Responsibility

Before we even pretend to be practicing Yoga, we must develop a solid inner ethical compass. That is Patanjali's most important message from 2000 years ago. The five Yama-s are the first and most relevant level of the eight famous limbs. They constitute the great vow, an ethical foundation which all religions and societies - in theory - agree upon.
No one we know would probably dispute them. We all agree, that this should be our human DNA.
How much more so is it of course the very heart of all Yoga practice. There is no Yoga when we violate any of them, no matter who we are, where we are, when we are or in which situations we are.
  1. ahimsā-satyāsteya-brahmacaryāparigrahā yamāḥ
The (5) yama-s are: Ahimsa (nonviolence), satya (authenticity), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacarya (one-with-all), āparigraha (non-grabbing-around)
  2. jāti-deśa-kāla-samayānavacchinnāḥ sārva-bhaumā mahāvratam
(They are) the great vow : Birth-place-era-circumstances-unlimited. In all situations.

Yogic Shame

Violating the great vow has practically the driving principle of modern Yoga.
That which has been re-framed as "Yoga" in just 20-30 years has creatd and nurtured selfish and abusive teacher personalities who are greedy for money and power. Don't get mislead by teachers who redefined their egotistical and superficial lifestyle as "yogic".
Capitalizm has perverted Yoga into a deeply rotten toxin - just like everything else.
The abuse of the yogic values is a tragedy.

Climate change as a painful mirror of the yogic lifestyle

We as part of a tiny global elite have already destroyed vast areas of the planet and kicked-off a practically unstoppable process of global warming.
We have no right to abuse the planet for our selfish agenda called the "western lifestyle".
95% of the world's population suffers from our air travel, our materializm, our greed. Yoga today has become a major part of that toxic system.
The solution is very simple and has very little to do with Yoga, just that it is explicitly stressed as the yogic primer: Live a lifestyle that every human could copy without destroying the planet. . Yoga means taking a CO2 calculator and to stop what needs to be stopped at once. If it's air travel, it's air travel. Yoga means becoming honest with yourself.

CLIMATE JUSTICE FOR ALL BEINGS

WE MUST NOT LOOK AWAY ANY LONGER!

For the last decades we all have been ignoring science and the warning signs of the crisis. We all just kept going. Also the Yogis. We should feel deeply ashamed.

Right now several billion humans and uncountable other beings are facing the consequences of the global climate crisis that our lifestyle has created especially in the past 30 years. Hundreds of thousands of species got EXTINCT.
Right now millions of children in our seeming stable countries realize that their parents and grandparents keep destroying their future.
Looking at vast regions in Africa, India etc. we see our own future. All mankind will experience floods, draught, fire, famine and mass migration if we don't change our behaviour RADICALLY.

How can we practice Yoga and not rebel against this situation?

HOW DARE WE YOGIS...

You can't watch Greta often enough. I feel the same grief about the ignorance of our generation. How can anyone on this planet not listen and stop the madness? How ignorant can we be towards our children's right for inheriting intact ecosystems? Greta Thunberg at the Climate Action Summit 2019
It is our duty to help all future beings on this planet. Our global fun lifestyle is not only a huge problem for all children but also for yourself. Air travel kills. Just for fun. Once you understand the evil in this, how can you not stop? How dare we even pretend talking about Yoga while killing others with a selfish lifestyle?

LIVE THE CHANGE

We are determined to do everything in our power to end the madness . Our mission is to

  1. EDUCATE: Everybody must know the scientific facts about the climate crisis and what we need to change. Check your self, use a CO2 calculator .
  2. SELF-CHANGE: Every human is an example (or excuse) for others. Therefore we must analyse and adjust your own behavior to minimize our CO2 emissions and other destructive patterns. Start with the morst important first. No. It is not your personal diet.
  3. BECOME ACTIVE: Only if each one of us begins to act we can stop the destruction of human civilization.
  4. GET ORGANIZED: You are not alone. Join groups such as Extinction Rebellion or Fridays for Future . We must protest until even the most ignorant leaders take responsibility!

Let us Unite the Yoga world

Yoga has become a mass movement. We hope that Yoga can become a mass movement to bring about change. Yoga practice is when you understandand the big picture. All Yoga practice is in vain if we cannot live in this world any longer.

Instead of talking about new postures we should be talking about new ways to avoid global warming. Let us unite all schools of Yoga behind one goal that we all agree upon. Yoga is equal to serving the divine creation.

WE DECLARE

  • We are dedicated at fighting against global warming and pollution
  • We support everybody dedicated at fighting global destruction
  • We understand our individual responsibility as a role model for others.
  • We avoid all air travel as it is the most destructive individual behavior to the planet
  • We do not teach retreats or workshops that produce air travel
  • We do not invite or advertise Yoga teachers or events neglecting their responsibility for the planet.
